Panelist BiosChris Wells, VP of Human Resources and Information Technology, Xoma
Charles C. Wells is Vice President, Human Resources and Information Technology. In this role, Mr. Wells is responsible for setting and implementing company’s Human Resources and Information Technology strategies. Prior to joining XOMA in May 2001, he served as Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Roche Pharmaceuticals, a position he held since 1995. During a career that spans more than 30 years, Mr. Wells has held human resources positions with Syntex Corporation (prior to the Roche acquisition), Epic Healthcare (a hospital management company), Frito Lay and Burlington Industries. In these various roles, he has been instrumental in the design and delivery of a number of key domestic and international change initiatives and processes that brought to fruition human resource strategies developed under his leadership. Mr. Wells holds a B.A. in Psychology from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. He is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, the Northern California Human Resource Council, and the HR Strategic Issues Council.
Mark Wood, VP of Human Resources
Mr. Wood joined BioMarin in May 2004 and currently serves as the Vice President of Human Resources, with responsibility for all HR functions as well as public relations and corporate communications. Prior to joining BioMarin, he was the sole proprietor of an HR consulting practice from 2002 to 2004; Vice President of Human Resources & Administration for AG Consulting, a global professional services firm, from 1998 to 2002; the Manager of Compensation and Quantitative Analysis at Genentech from 1993 to 1998; and held a variety of HR positions at Wells Fargo Bank from 1991 to 1993. Mr. Wood holds a master's degree in industrial relations from Cornell University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology and management from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is active in public-private partnerships for economic development in the Bay Area, including his current role as Vice Chair of the North Bay Leadership Council and a previous term as Chair of the Marin County Workforce Investment Board.
Judy Batlin, Vice President of Organizational Learning, Development, and Human Resources
Judy Batlin has served as Onyx's Vice President of Organizational learning, development, and Human Resources since February 2008, and had previously served as an organization development consultant at Onyx since 2005. Ms. Batlin specializes in developing leadership competencies and overall effectiveness of teams and individual employees. She has over twenty years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, and during her career has collaborated with a variety of organizations such as Acologix, Exelixis, Iconix Pharmaceuticals, Genentech, Pharmacopeia, Celera, Stanford Medical Center and Clinics, Chiron, and Berlex. Earlier in her career, Ms. Batlin served as director of organizational learning, as well as director of staffing and employee relations for Chiron Corporation. Previously, she held the position of associate director of human resource development at Berlex Laboratories.
Stacy Markel is Vice President, Human Resources at Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc, a rapidly growing Swiss biopharmaceutical company. Stacy sits on the Executive Leadership Team and heads up human resources, talent management and facilities. She also is a member of the Global HR Strategy team. Stacy joined Actelion in 2002 shortly after Actelion launched its first commercial product. Stacy has been instrumental in creating and leading the sales training function, executing extensive leadership development initiatives as well as repositioning Human Resources at Actelion as a key business partner in driving the leadership vision. Actelion's core values and culture are major drivers of the Company's success, and the Human Resources function at Actelion is a strategic partner in building on this strategic advantage. Stacy has been instrumental in the successful growth of the organization. Stacy joined Actelion after a 10 year career at Roche Pharmaceuticals in sales and sales management where she developed an intimate understanding of the pharmaceutical industry.
Beth Weinstein, former VP of Organization Effectiveness and Talent Management, Life Technologies
Beth Weinstein is a seasoned HR and OD executive, who brings to her OD consulting and executive coaching practice over 20 years of commercial experience across a range of industries. Most recently Beth was Vice President of Organization Effectiveness and Talent Development for Life Technologies, a global, multibillion dollar biotechnology tools company. In this global enterprise role, Beth was responsible for all learning and development, talent management and organization effectiveness consulting for the newly combined 10,000 employee company. Prior to this role, Beth served in several senior Human Resource leadership roles at Applied Biosystems. She was the HR leader for several global multibillion dollar businesses, building both business and HR leadership teams that could quickly scale to drive growth in the dynamic life science markets. Earlier in her career within the high tech sector at Quantum, Beth led global, enterprise organizations focused on organization effectiveness, talent management, learning and development, and talent acquisition. Beth also worked in marketing roles for Johnson & Johnson. She earned her MBA at Duke University and BS at Cornell University.
