Assessment Tools 101: Which one do I choose?

Our first BOLD Workshop was a success! Over 35 people attended this three hour workshop focused on Assessment Instruments. Three Assessments were highlighted through a panel discussion, breakout session and participant Q&A.
Workshop Format:
- Moderated Panel Discussion: Three vendors representing three different Assessment Tools: DiSC, MBTI, Enneagram, will be accompanied by three HR representatives from local biotech/pharma/high-tech companies that have used one of these vendor assessments. All will share their experience using their assessment tools within their companies.
- Vendor sponsored breakout discussions of each of the three assessment tools

The Guide includes a short definition about each assessment instrument, how it works and aspects that make the instrument unique. A three page Matrix in the Guide shows a complete overview of program costs, contact information and who benefits most from taking the assessment. A special thanks to those vendors that contributed their information.

DiSC – Jill McGillen, NEXT TURN Consulting
Jill is President of NEXT TURN Consulting and Training. The mission of NEXT TURN is to maximize performance and productivity for client organizations. Working with managers and teams NEXT TURN’s programs offer employees and managers practical and effective solutions to workplace problems. NEXT TURN offers classes in effective communication, building strong teams, and training managers in leadership development. Jill has worked with numerous local and international organizations such as Gilead Sciences, Golden Gate Bridge District, Stanford University and City and County of San Francisco. She has previously taught this Leadership and Supervisory series for the Port of Oakland. Jill also writes a syndicated weekly work advice column, Ask Jill, for several newspapers including the Oakland Tribune and the San Mateo County Times.
MBTI – Jerry Pico, People Knowledge Works Consulting
Jerry is a Human Resources Development Consultant who has a record of over twenty years of achievements in the areas of organizational effectiveness, coaching, leader development, talent acquisition, human resources and business management – including eight years in his own consulting practice, People & Knowledge Works Consulting. He is passionate about, and committed to, supporting individuals, teams and organizations in their healthy growth and development, performance improvement, and the exploration and attainment of their goals. Jerry is qualified by the Association of Psychological Type (APT) to administer and interpret the MBTI for individuals and groups. He has been using the MBTI and Myers-Briggs methodology to help individuals and groups enhance their self-understanding, relationships and performance for over a dozen years. Jerry is also a member of the Bay Area Association of Psychological Type, International Coaches Federation – San Francisco Chapter and Bay Area Organization Development Network.
Enneagram – Jane Tight, SeeChange Partners
Jane is a business and life coach and certified Enneagram teacher who guides clients in personal and professional growth. She works with individuals and groups in private and corporate venues to help them to lead lives that are fulfilling, balanced, productive and satisfying. Her client mix is diverse including: CEOs, lawyers, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and women-in-transition. Jane has a master’s degree in communication disorders/language pathology from University of Redlands. She became a certified business and life coach in 1998 through the Coaches Training Institute and a certified Enneagram teacher with Palmers and Daniels in 2002. Her philosophy is that her clients are already experts on their lives and what they are looking for is focus, change, clarification, direction or accountability in moving forward toward creating the kind of life they really want to live. As she works with clients, they become clearer about who they are and what they really want. Life becomes easier, more fulfilling and enjoyable! Jane is a frequent public speaker and has facilitated conferences at Stanford University and for YPO (Young President’s Organization).
Assessment Tool - HR/OD Representatives:
DiSC – Marco Rosa, MAP Pharmaceuticals
Mr. Rosa brings over 20 years of human resources experience to the Company. Most recently, Mr. Rosa worked at Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc. as Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources, a position he had held since May of 2002. He was an integral part of the senior management team overseeing the company's growth and the commercial launch of several ophthalmology and surgical microscopy devices. Prior to Carl Zeiss, Mr. Rosa served as Vice President, Human Resources at COR Therapeutics, Inc., building the development and commercial organizations and launching Integrilin® in the cardiovascular angioplasty market. Before joining COR, Mr. Rosa held senior human resources and key administrative management positions with ReplayTV, Inc., Genelabs Technologies, Inc., Sony Electronics Inc. and the General Electric Company. In addition to his extensive human resources experience, Mr. Rosa served as a Captain in the BioMedical Corps of the United States Air Force. Mr. Rosa received his B.A. degree in Psychology from St. Michael's College and his M.A. degree in Counseling Psychology from New York University.
MBTI – Emily Couey, Associate Director of HR, Genomic Health (GHI)
Emily initially joined a small team at Genomic Health who had hopes of developing products that would improve the quality of care for cancer patients. After six years and 370 enthusiastic hires, and with a commercial Breast Cancer diagnostic product on the market and a colon cancer product in the pipeline, Emily oversees GHI’s Training and Development, Performance Management, Staffing, Compensation, Benefits and HRIS functions and initiatives. Prior to joining Genomic Health, Emily held human resource generalist positions with Alza Corporation and two adventure travel start-ups. She is SHPR Certified and holds a B.S in Human Resources from CSU, Chico. Culture is viewed as a competitive advantage at GHI. Emily strives to implement programs that create a world class working environment infused with the company values. As a result, GHI has been recognized in the Denison Culture Survey as having a culture that is in the top one percent of the 600+ companies that it surveys on a regular basis.
Enneagram – Maggie Logie, IDEO
Maggie joined IDEO as the global Talent & Organization lead, where she designs innovative programs and systems to support Wellness at IDEO. With an eye towards employee engagement and well-being, Maggie has tackled a variety of projects, including a peer-to-peer mentoring program for women and a leadership development course to enhance personal awareness and efficacy. Maggie currently leads a project to design solutions for increased flexibility and work/life fit, while also pioneering a global redesign of IDEO’s employee relocation strategies to promote career growth. Prior to joining IDEO, Maggie spent 10 years making sure that other people were having fun. As a corporate meeting & incentive planner, Maggie led domestic and international programs for companies like Toyota, Jafra Cosmetics, Blue Shield and Pepsi. Maggie believes that real life is better than fiction. She can be found at local flea markets trying to piece together the lives of others. She also enjoys non-fiction writing & This American Life. Maggie’s true passion is her soon to be trademarked real life wellness tool, Friendologie.
MODERATOR: Danielle Olander is the Associate Director of Human Resources for Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Prior to joining Portola, she held positions as a generalist with SuperGen, Inc and Sugen, Inc., she currently has over fourteen years of human resources experience, with eight years in the biotech/pharma industry. Danielle holds a BS in human resources from Colorado Technical University. Danielle's main focus centers around continuous process and communication improvement by understanding the roadblocks that keep employees from communicating with their managers and achieving their goals. A BOLD member since 2005, Danielle now volunteers on the BOLD core team and programs committee.
